The porch light is still on at the house next to the church. Last month this congregation printed a courage sentence for the street: we go, we tell, we are not afraid. A board facing the sidewalk carried the line through a season of weather. A household that does not sit in this room already knows whether the people who quoted Caleb still handed the block a grasshopper sentence as if it were the only public news.
A teenager walking that sidewalk is deciding whether this church is a people who can show fruit and still name the God who called, or a set of mission words with a quieter fear the neighbors already repeated.
This is a sermon about the witness Numbers 13 makes public. If you preach it as a map of anyone's private anxiety, you will lie. If you preach it as Israel at Kadesh, receiving a true report of real walls while forgetting the God who had already given the land, you give this church a living God whose character still belongs in the sentence after the walls are named, and a people who cannot treat a printed courage sentence as the witness the neighbors on this block can already see.
Text
Hear the report as Holy Scripture tells it, from the World English Bible: "They returned from spying out the land at the end of forty days. They went and came to Moses, to Aaron, and to all the congregation of the children of Israel, to the wilderness of Paran, to Kadesh; and brought back word to them and to all the congregation. They showed them the fruit of the land. They told him, and said, “We came to the land where you sent us. Surely it flows with milk and honey, and this is its fruit.
