A church retreat registration can look simple to the person who designed it. Choose a room, pay the fee, arrange the journey. Yet someone reading that same page may be calculating groceries, lost working hours, childcare, and the cost of asking for help. This is an imagined contemporary example, not an event in Scripture. It helps us notice how an invitation can become difficult to accept before anyone has deliberately closed a door.

Money can also shape what people believe about their place before God. A person may fear that a small gift means a smaller welcome. Someone else may expect a large gift to secure a quicker appointment or protection from correction. Both expectations distort the church's witness. We need to speak about financial realities without assigning spiritual worth to a bank balance.

Leviticus 5 addresses a different setting: particular offenses and offerings within Israel's covenant life at Sinai. We must hear that law in its own setting before making an application. God specifies what the worshiper brings and what the priest does. Within those instructions, God makes provision for the person who cannot afford an animal from the flock, and then for the person who cannot afford even two birds.

Poverty does not cancel the provision God has made for atonement. Our message follows three movements: God recognizes the worshiper's actual means; God provides the appointed way of atonement; and Christ's sufficient offering shapes a church that welcomes without selling access. We will distinguish forgiveness from financial improvement. This passage does not promise a better income, erase accountability, or make church programs a modern sacrificial system. It does challenge the shame and preference that money can bring into our common life.
