A Seat at the King's Table: What This Changes Between Us

Ready to Preach

Covenant kindness restores dignity to someone expecting judgment, so this church cannot keep one unofficial they-sit-elsewhere sentence as the last word the rest of the room has to live under.

A Seat at the King's Table: What This Changes Between Us Preview · Opening of the manuscript The foyer still has two versions of the same welcome. Last month this church said we are family after a named household came back from a long absence. One person received that sentence as cover. The chairs around them received a quieter they-sit-elsewhere version by Tuesday.

A neighbor two seats over is deciding whether this church can sit together without keeping an unofficial far table between them, or whether one they-do-not-belong-here sentence writes the public life the rest of you have to live under.

This is a sermon about what 2 Samuel 9 changes between you. If you preach it as a map of anyone's private shame or hallway temperament, you will lie. If you preach it as David in Jerusalem, a real king, a real grandson of Saul, a real house in Lo Debar, and a God whose kindness keeps a sworn word after the friend is dead, you give this church a God who will not let an unofficial far table become the last word a watching people are allowed to keep. You also take away the cheap community move that treats a borrowed they-sit-elsewhere as the peace the rest of the room already has to keep.
