Worship With Empty Hands: The Practice That Makes It Visible

The bulletin already has a blank where the prayer request used to live. Someone took the name down because the family asked for privacy. Someone else still wants a sentence that will make the taking look managed. This room knows how to print "God is good" in the same hour it cannot name the loss out loud.

That speed can be reverence. It can also be a way of keeping worship as a finished feeling while the hands stay empty where nobody has to watch.

Someone will want this sermon to stay indoors: a private trust, a private blessing of the name, a private decision not to charge God, all of it finished before anyone else has to see the tearing. Job 1 will not let you keep the worship private. He tears the robe. He shaves the head. He falls down on the ground. He blesses Yahweh's name in the same hour the messengers have finished. The practice occupies air other people could still have heard.

If you preach Job 1 as a map of anyone's interior weather, you will lie. If you preach it as a man in Uz, after livestock, servants, and children are gone, who worships without a transcript of the heavenly council, you give this church a God whose name can be blessed when the hands are empty, and a people who still have to decide whether that blessing will stay a mood or become a practice the flock can still recognize.

Pastors know the indoor version. We know how to say the right sentence in the study and then leave the hour looking managed. Then the week comes for three households at once, or for you, and the old language about giving and taking starts to sound like a slogan you are no longer sure should leave the building. The text will put a practice on the ground.
