Worship With Empty Hands: For the Week You Did Not Choose

The casserole is already in the oven before anyone has said the sentence out loud. The church knows how to move. A meal train can be live before the coroner has left the driveway. That speed is love. It can also be a way of filling the hands so nobody has to look at them empty.

Someone will want a reason. Someone will reach for a verse that makes the wind look managed. Someone will say God needed another angel, or that everything happens for a reason, or that at least they are in a better place, as if the better place were a receipt you could hold up at the table. Job 1 will not help you run that sentence. Job 1 will put a man on the ground with a shaved head and a torn robe, and it will let him worship without an explanation.

Pastors know this hour. You have stood in it with other people for years. Then the week comes for three households in the same month, or for you, and the old language about the Lord giving and taking starts to sound like a slogan you are no longer sure you should say in public. The text will not scold the fear. It will slow the panic.

Job 1 is not a pamphlet for the funeral lunch. It is older and harder than that. It is the church's record of a blameless man in Uz who lost livestock, servants, and children in one afternoon, and who fell down and worshiped. If you preach it as a technique for getting through grief faster, you will lie to people whose hands are still empty. If you preach it as the record of a God whose name can be blessed when the taking is real, you will give them something they can actually carry into Tuesday.
