The man who lost the job on Friday sits two seats over. He has a choice that is not a choice: take the offer that will move the children, or stay and watch the savings die. A deacon two pews forward signed both cards. He has a sentence about the sea. He has not asked who still stands between the army and the water.

This is a sermon for a church that already knows how to print a way through the water and does not know how to stay with people who did not choose this week. If you preach Exodus 14 as a map of anyone's private panic, you will lie. If you preach it as Israel between Pharaoh and the sea, you give this church a God who makes a way where fear can see only a dead end, and you take away the cheap care that hides behind a finished crossing slogan.
