One row is ready to clap because something new is finally on the ground. Another row cannot clap because they can still see the house that fell. Between them a well-meaning leader is trying to pick a mood for the room. Keep it hopeful. Keep it honest. Pick one. The parking lot already knows the room did not pick one.

I have sat in rooms like that after a public failure, after a rebuild nobody asked for, after a year that took more than it gave. The temptation is to treat recovery as a branding problem. If we can get the sound right, maybe the wreck will recede. Ezra 3 will not bless that stall.

This is a sermon for a church that already knows how to survive a wreck and does not know how to come back without forcing one sound from a people who still remember what was lost. If you preach Ezra 3 as a map of anyone's private renovation anxiety, you will lie. If you preach it as Israel laying the foundation of Yahweh's temple after exile, with real builders, real priests in vestments, real old men who had seen the first house, and a God who receives shout and weeping in the same air, you give this church a God who will not let leftover mood management write the road back.
