Fully Known and Not Abandoned: The Witness Our Neighbors Can See

The porch light is already on when the neighbor asks how church was. Weather can still fill that answer. A program can still fill it. A God who has searched you, hemmed you in, formed you, and is still with you when you wake can stay a fact the sanctuary already believes and the sidewalk never has to see.

Psalm 139 will not scold the porch. It will refuse the unofficial rule that being fully known is indoor theology.

This is a sermon for a church that already believes God knows and still treats that knowledge as a reason to keep hope off the street. If you preach the psalm as a pep talk about self-worth, you will lie. If you preach it as a threat, you will send already-exposed people home more afraid of being seen than of the Lord.

Preach it as prayer-poetry: the God who already knows you has not abandoned you. Then name what that refuge is supposed to make visible to a neighbor this week.

Hear Psalm 139:1-18, from the World English Bible: "Yahweh, you have searched me, and you know me. You know my sitting down and my rising up. You perceive my thoughts from afar. You search out my path and my lying down, and are acquainted with all my ways. For there is not a word on my tongue, but behold, Yahweh, you know it altogether. You hem me in behind and before. You laid your hand on me. This knowledge is beyond me. It’s lofty. I can’t attain it.
