The God Who Sees: The Road Back After Failure

The unread thread is still in her phone. She sent the true sentence in February. The group said they would walk with her. By April the thread had gone quiet except for logistics. Nobody staged a trial. The week arrived like a silence you keep extending because a person after a wreck is easier to manage if she stays slightly out of reach.

A man in the last row can tell the same story from a different wreck. He told the truth in Lent. The room thanked him for his honesty. Then the room learned how to leave him a chair at the edge and call the distance space. He still parks on the far side. He still leaves during the last song. He has started treating invisibility as the last dignity he has left. The last row can also be a wilderness a person chose because he does not believe anyone will come to the fountain.

This is a sermon for a church that already knows how to survive a wreck and does not know how to be found after one. If you preach Genesis 16 as a map of the hearer's relapse, you will lie. If you preach it as Yahweh finding Hagar after the household stayed home, you give this church a God whose seeing can be received on the road back after failure.
