Step Into the River: What This Changes Between Us

Ready to Preach

The living God who goes first still opens some paths only after obedient feet enter the water, so this church cannot keep a brother's dry shoes as the only public memory the rest of the room has to live under.

The hallway still has two versions of the same first step. Last month this church named a river out loud: a visit nobody wanted to schedule, a reconciliation the whole table already finished explaining, a shared work the sanctuary already called obedience. One household said we will go when we feel ready. The chairs around them received that sentence as if it were the only public memory the rest of you are allowed to live under.

A teenager two seats down is deciding whether this church is a people who can put a foot in the water together, or a set of private delays that write the public line for everybody else.

This is a sermon about what Joshua 3 changes between you. If you preach it as a map of anyone's private courage program, you will lie. If you preach it as Israel at harvest flood, priests carrying the ark, soles in the Jordan before the water moved, you give this church a living God who goes first, and a people who cannot keep a brother's dry shoes as the only public memory the rest of the room has to live under.

Text

Hear the crossing as Holy Scripture tells it, from the World English Bible: "Yahweh said to Joshua, “Today I will begin to magnify you in the sight of all Israel, that they may know that as I was with Moses, so I will be with you. You shall command the priests who bear the ark of the covenant, saying, ‘When you come to the brink of the waters of the Jordan, you shall stand still in the Jordan.’” Joshua said to the children of Israel, “Come here, and hear the words of Yahweh your God.”
