A church can know a teacher's favorite expressions and still struggle to explain a paragraph of Scripture. People may remember where the teacher paused, what stories drew a laugh, and which sentence always closed the service. Those memories can be affectionate and good. But a familiar voice cannot be the foundation that holds a congregation together after that voice is gone.
Imagine a small group whose longtime leader is preparing to move. This is an illustration, not an account from the Bible. Someone asks who will lead next month. The room grows quiet. Everyone has attended for years, but no one has practiced explaining the passage. The departing leader has been generous with information and scarce with opportunities. The gap becomes visible when the calendar changes.
Peter writes with a departure before him. He does not respond by making his continued presence the condition of everyone else's faithfulness. He wants believers to remember the truth after he is gone. His legacy concerns what will remain available to them: the truth he has taught, reliable testimony about Christ, and the prophetic word to which they must attend.
This sermon asks teachers to prepare for departure and learners to become responsible readers. It does not ask us to despise beloved pastors. It asks whether their teaching has helped us know the Lord they proclaim. The church belongs to Christ. Faithful teachers can therefore prepare others without treating their own eventual absence as the end of God's work.

Read 2 Peter 1:12–21 in the World English Bible. Therefore I will not be negligent to remind you of these things, though you know them and are established in the present truth.
I think it right, as long as I am in this tent, to stir you up by reminding you, knowing that the putting off of my tent comes swiftly, even as our Lord Jesus Christ made clear to me.
