Leave Something at the Edge: The Witness Our Neighbors Can See

The porch light is still on at the house next to the church. Last month this congregation printed a mission sentence for the street: love your neighbor, serve the poor, welcome the foreigner. A board facing the sidewalk carried the line through a season of weather. A block over, a household that does not sit in this room already knows whether the field behind that sentence still has an edge standing, or whether the harvest went home in private while the banner stayed public.

A teenager walking that sidewalk is deciding whether this church is a people whose God can be seen at an unharvested edge, or a set of mission words with a stripped corner the neighbors already named.

This is a sermon about the witness Leviticus 19 makes public. If you preach it as a map of anyone's overfull calendar, you will lie. If you preach it as Yahweh's law to Israel in the land, you give this church a holy God whose character shows up where the poor and the foreigner can already walk, and a people who cannot treat a printed mission sentence as the witness the street can already see.

Hear the statute as Holy Scripture tells it, from the World English Bible: "When you reap the harvest of your land, you shall not wholly reap the corners of your field, neither shall you gather the gleanings of your harvest. You shall not glean your vineyard, neither shall you gather the fallen grapes of your vineyard. You shall leave them for the poor and for the foreigner. I am Yahweh your God. You shall not steal. You shall not lie. You shall not deceive one another. You shall not swear by my name falsely, and profane the name of your God. I am Yahweh. You shall not oppress your neighbor, nor rob him. The wages of a hired servant shall not remain with you all night until the morning. You shall not curse the deaf, nor put a stumbling block before the blind; but you shall fear your God. I am Yahweh. You shall do no injustice in judgment. You shall not be partial to the poor, nor show favoritism to the great; but you shall judge your neighbor in righteousness. You shall not go around as a slanderer among your people.
