When Joy and Grief Share the Room: The Witness Our Neighbors Can See

The unused invite is still facedown on the neighboring stoop. Last month this church said both sounds are welcome after a named rebuild went public on the block. One hallway received that sentence as cover. The sidewalk received a quieter indoor version by Tuesday: keep the mixed hour inside, because nobody on the street has to hear shout and weeping in the same air.

A neighbor at the next stoop is deciding whether this church still tells the truth about God where the street can still hear it, or whether leftover indoor mixed sound is the only public news the block is allowed to keep.

This is a sermon about the witness Ezra 3 already sets in public. If you preach it as a map of anyone's renovation anxiety, you will lie. If you preach it as narrative of Israel laying the foundation of Yahweh's house after exile, you give this church a God who received shout and weeping in the same air, and who let that noise travel far enough that a watching neighbor could hear what this body does with both.
