Go Without the Map: The Responsibility in the Room

The packet is still labeled "transition." Three elders have a foyer sentence about waiting on a clearer picture. The youth volunteer list has the same unsigned line it had in April. Across the table, a good woman who runs the calendar will not name a shepherd until a five-year plan hangs on the wall. Nobody staged a coup. The week did not arrive like a crisis. It arrived like a meeting you keep adjourning because the land does not look finished yet.

A man in the third row can tell the same story from a different chair. He has carried the same youth packet through four Tuesday nights. Last month he asked for more time to pray, and the room let him, because the room also wanted the cover. Then he went home and called that oversight. The map is missing. The flock is already in the room.

This is a sermon for a church in an uncertain transition that has started treating leadership as a later chapter. If you preach Genesis 12 as a diagram of the hearer's org chart, you will lie. If you preach it as Yahweh calling Abram before the land was shown, with a people already named in the going, you give this church a God who can be obeyed in a charge that is already in the lap while the next mile is still a ridge.

Hear the call as Holy Scripture tells it, from the World English Bible: "Now Yahweh said to Abram, “Leave your country, and your relatives, and your father’s house, and go to the land that I will show you. I will make of you a great nation. I will bless you and make your name great.

You will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and I will curse him who treats you with contempt. All the families of the earth will be blessed through you.” So Abram went, as Yahweh had told him. Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he departed from Haran. Abram took Sarai his wife, Lot his brother’s son, all their possessions that they had gathered, and the people whom they had acquired in Haran, and they went to go into the land of Canaan. They entered into the land of Canaan.
