Step Into the River: The Witness Our Neighbors Can See

Ready to Preach

The living God who goes first still opens some paths only after obedient feet enter the water, so this church cannot treat a printed first-step sentence as the witness our neighbors can already see.

The unused invite is still facedown under the mat. Last month this church printed take the first step on the mission board after a neighbor named a river this porch already finished explaining: a visit nobody scheduled, a meal the street already knew was owed, a named household this sanctuary already called obedience. One hallway said we will go when we feel ready. The sidewalk received that sentence as if it were the only public news the block is allowed to keep.

A kid on that sidewalk is deciding whether this church is a people who put a foot in the water where a neighbor can see it, or a people who keep the Name in the sanctuary and let the street hear only how the shoes stayed dry.

This is a sermon about the witness our neighbors can already see. If you preach it as a map of anyone's private courage program, you will lie. If you preach it as Israel at harvest flood, priests carrying the ark, soles in the Jordan before the water moved, you give this church a living God who goes first, and a people who cannot treat a printed first-step sentence as the witness the block can already name.

Text

Hear the crossing as Holy Scripture tells it, from the World English Bible: "Yahweh said to Joshua, “Today I will begin to magnify you in the sight of all Israel, that they may know that as I was with Moses, so I will be with you. You shall command the priests who bear the ark of the covenant, saying, ‘When you come to the brink of the waters of the Jordan, you shall stand still in the Jordan.’” Joshua said to the children of Israel, “Come here, and hear the words of Yahweh your God.”
