Leave Something at the Edge: The Practice That Makes It Visible

The last crate is already stacked for the pantry photo. Last month a widow on this block asked, out loud, who eats after the harvest dinner. The hallway answered with a verse, a benevolence form, and a promise to follow up. By Sunday the same hallway can quote Leviticus and still strip the corners, as if holiness were a private feeling the street does not have to see.

A kid on the sidewalk is deciding whether this church is a people who leave the edge of the field or a people who harvest the whole acre and then print neighbor-love on a card.

This is a sermon about the practice that makes holiness visible. If you preach it as a map of anyone's overfull calendar, you will lie. If you preach it as Yahweh's law to Israel in the land, you give this church a holy God whose character shows up at the unharvested edge, and a people who cannot treat a finished generosity sentence as the care the poor and the foreigner can already name.

Hear the statute as Holy Scripture tells it, from the World English Bible: "When you reap the harvest of your land, you shall not wholly reap the corners of your field, neither shall you gather the gleanings of your harvest. You shall not glean your vineyard, neither shall you gather the fallen grapes of your vineyard. You shall leave them for the poor and for the foreigner. I am Yahweh your God. You shall not steal. You shall not lie. You shall not deceive one another. You shall not swear by my name falsely, and profane the name of your God. I am Yahweh. You shall not oppress your neighbor, nor rob him. The wages of a hired servant shall not remain with you all night until the morning. You shall not curse the deaf, nor put a stumbling block before the blind; but you shall fear your God. I am Yahweh. You shall do no injustice in judgment. You shall not be partial to the poor, nor show favoritism to the great; but you shall judge your neighbor in righteousness. You shall not go around as a slanderer among your people.
