The folder on the table still has last quarter's volunteer grid. Three names are highlighted. One of them ran the Tuesday room until the season ended. The highlight is still there. The name is not on this week's agenda. Nobody at the table staged a firing. The week arrived like a calendar that learned how to finish with a person without ever saying the sentence out loud.

A man two chairs down can tell you the same story from a different seat. He signed the last roster that used her. He also signed the first one that did not. He has a sentence about capacity. He has not asked where she came from or where she is going.

This is a sermon about the responsibility already in the room. If you preach Genesis 16 as a map of the hearer's feelings, you will lie. If you preach it as Yahweh finding Hagar after the people with power stayed home, you give this church a God whose seeing can be obeyed at the table that used her.

Text

Hear the finding as Holy Scripture tells it, from the World English Bible: "Yahweh’s angel found her by a fountain of water in the wilderness, by the fountain on the way to Shur.
