Worship With Empty Hands: The Witness Our Neighbors Can See

The unused casserole is still sitting in a kitchen this church already named. Last month this church printed Blessed be the name after a house on the block went quiet. One hallway received that sentence as cover.

The sidewalk received a quieter indoor version by Tuesday: keep the tearing inside, because nobody on the street has to see empty hands and a blessed name occupy the same air.

A neighbor at the next stoop is deciding whether this church still tells the truth about God where the street can still see it, or whether leftover indoor empty-handed worship is the only public news the block is allowed to keep.

This is a sermon about the witness Job 1 already sets in public. If you preach it as a map of anyone's interior weather, you will lie. If you preach it as a man in Uz, after livestock, servants, and children are gone, who worships without a transcript of the heavenly council, you give this church a God whose name can be blessed when the hands are empty, and a people who still have to decide whether that blessing will stay a mood one hallway keeps or become an hour a watching neighbor can still recognize.

Hear the first hour of Job's loss, from the World English Bible: "Then Job arose, and tore his robe, and shaved his head, and fell down on the ground, and worshiped. He said, “Naked I came out of my mother’s womb, and naked will I return there. Yahweh gave, and Yahweh has taken away. Blessed be Yahweh’s name.” In all this, Job didn’t sin, nor charge God with wrongdoing."

This is Job in Uz, after the messengers have finished. It is not a diagram of your fellowship hall, your unfinished diagnosis, or the quieter indoor slogan this staff already owns. Application comes after that fact, from the God who still receives empty hands, who does not require a transcript, and who lets honest grief and honest worship occupy air a neighbor could still have seen.
