Go Without the Map: The Witness Our Neighbors Can See

He has mowed the strip between his driveway and the church parking lot for two summers. He knows the service times from the sign. He knows which cars belong to the early crowd. He has never been asked to a table. The church is waiting for a clearer year. They have a mission sentence on the foyer wall. They have a card that says come and see. They do not have a map for the street that already watches them.

A woman on the same block watched a U-Haul fill last Thursday. The household that filled it had been the church people next door. She heard no sentence about why they were going. She heard the door close. The map was missing. The witness left without being seen.

This is a sermon for a church in an uncertain transition that has started treating neighbor-witness as a later chapter. If you preach Genesis 12 as a diagram of the hearer's anxiety, you will lie. If you preach it as Yahweh calling Abram before the land was shown, with the families of the earth already named in the promise, you give this church a God who can be obeyed in public while the next mile is still a ridge.

Hear the call as Holy Scripture tells it, from the World English Bible: "Now Yahweh said to Abram, “Leave your country, and your relatives, and your father’s house, and go to the land that I will show you. I will make of you a great nation. I will bless you and make your name great.

You will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and I will curse him who treats you with contempt. All the families of the earth will be blessed through you.” So Abram went, as Yahweh had told him. Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he departed from Haran. Abram took Sarai his wife, Lot his brother’s son, all their possessions that they had gathered, and the people whom they had acquired in Haran, and they went to go into the land of Canaan. They entered into the land of Canaan.
