The Faithfulness That Stays: The Practice That Makes It Visible

The discipleship class finished Ruth 1:16 on a slide. They said the words together. Where you go, I will go.

The room liked the sound of it. Then they stacked the chairs and left a woman in the back row to figure out who still sits with her after the diagnosis she named out loud ten minutes earlier.

A man two seats over copied the verse into his journal. He had already decided he would not take the Tuesday night shift at his brother's house. The brother is a widower. The class called that a boundary. The brother called it Tuesday.

This is a sermon for a church that already owns loyalty language and still treats leaving as the ordinary week. If you preach Ruth 1 as a map of anyone's attachment style, you will lie. If you preach it as Naomi on the road from Moab, Orpah kissing her, Ruth staying, Yahweh already visiting his people with bread, you give this church a God whose covenant love does not wait for a convenient hour, and you take away the cheap discipleship move that treats a printed stay as the practice that makes that love visible.
