The woman whose scan was supposed to have an answer by now sits in the third row with a calendar she did not ask to carry. The man whose job was supposed to close last Friday sits two seats over. A deacon two pews forward signed both cards. He has a sentence about God's timing. He has not asked who still needs a god they can see.

This is a sermon for a church that already knows how to print control and does not know how to stay with people who did not choose this week. If you preach Exodus 32 as a map of anyone's private impatience, you will lie. If you preach it as Israel at the foot of the mountain, you give this church a God who will not be fashioned, and you take away the cheap care that hides behind a god we can carry.
