The ink was still wet enough to smear if you touched it. The people who had treated that floor as a mountain discovered the mountain could be shaken into the sea without asking the church office first.

Some weeks arrive like that. A scan. A letter. A storm that takes the roof. A marriage that walks out while the coffee is still hot. The furniture of ordinary life is still in the house, and the ground under it has already moved.

You can feel the room reach for a script. Someone says God is still on the throne. Someone else starts planning a meal train before they have heard the actual sentence. Both instincts can be love. Both can also pretend the mountain did not fall.

Psalm 46 will not scold the love. It will refuse the pretend. This is a sermon for a church walking into a week it did not pick. If you preach Psalm 46 as a breathing exercise, you will lie. If you preach it as a promise that stillness will put the mountain back, you will lie in a different direction. Preach it as a psalm that names a God who remains refuge while the earth changes, and you give this church a place to stand that does not require the week to reverse first.

Hear Psalm 46, from the World English Bible: "God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we won’t be afraid, though the earth changes, though the mountains are shaken into the heart of the seas; though its waters roar and are troubled, though the mountains tremble with their swelling. Selah. There is a river, the streams of which make the city of God glad, the holy place of the tents of the Most High. God is within her. She shall not be moved. God will help her at dawn. The nations raged. The kingdoms were moved. He lifted his voice and the earth melted. Yahweh of Armies is with us. The God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah. Come, see Yahweh’s works, what desolations he has made on the earth. He makes wars cease to the end of the earth.
