When Fear Writes the Report: The Practice That Makes It Visible

Ready to Preach

Fear can describe real obstacles while forgetting the God who called, so this church cannot treat a finished courage sentence as the practice the people already attached to this week can see.

The practice card is already stacked by the door. Last month this class named courage as the week's work.

By Tuesday the same hallway could quote Caleb and still write the unofficial report: we aren't able. The grapes from the illustration sit in a bowl nobody has touched. The walls got described. The Name did not.

A kid in the hallway is deciding whether this church is a people who can show fruit and still refuse the grasshopper sentence, or a people who print a practice and then let fear write the only public line.

This is a sermon about the practice that makes courage visible. If you preach Numbers 13 as a map of anyone's private anxiety, you will lie. If you preach it as Israel at Kadesh, receiving a true report of real walls while forgetting the God who had already given the land, you give this church a living God whose character still belongs in the sentence after the walls are named, and you take away the cheap formation that treats a finished courage card as the work.

Text

Hear the report as Holy Scripture tells it, from the World English Bible: "They returned from spying out the land at the end of forty days. They went and came to Moses, to Aaron, and to all the congregation of the children of Israel, to the wilderness of Paran, to Kadesh; and brought back word to them and to all the congregation. They showed them the fruit of the land. They told him, and said, “We came to the land where you sent us. Surely it flows with milk and honey, and this is its fruit.

However, the people who dwell in the land are strong, and the cities are fortified and very large. Moreover, we saw the children of Anak there. Amalek dwells in the land of the South. The Hittite, the Jebusite, and the Amorite dwell in the hill country. The Canaanite dwells by the sea, and along the side of the Jordan.”
