Imagine an ordinary kitchen table. This is a contemporary illustration, not a scene from Scripture. Bread is on a plate. Vegetables are in a bowl. One person can eat what is served; another needs something different. The meal itself is simple. What people make it mean may not be simple at all.

Someone can turn a plate into a spiritual report card. The person who refuses the most becomes the serious believer. The person who enjoys a meal begins to wonder whether gratitude is a sign of spiritual laziness.

Before long, what God gives for nourishment becomes an occasion for suspicion. We are measuring acceptance by what is missing from the table.

There are many good reasons to decline a particular food. An allergy is real. Medical treatment may require a careful diet. A person may choose a fast, or exercise restraint because of conscience or concern for a neighbor.

This sermon will not ask anyone to ignore those reasons. The question is whether a teacher can call God’s good creation spiritually inferior and make deprivation a condition of belonging to him.

That is the pressure Paul addresses. His answer does more than give us permission to enjoy dinner. It directs us back to the Creator, the truth of his word, and the posture of thanksgiving. Receive God’s good gifts with thanksgiving, guided by his word rather than rules that make deprivation a measure of acceptance.

Hear the passage

1 Timothy 4:1–5, World English Bible. Paul writes to Timothy about faithful teaching and conduct in God’s household. Hear the warning and the answer together.

But the Spirit says expressly that in later times some will fall away from the faith, paying attention to seducing spirits and doctrines of demons, through the hypocrisy of men who speak lies, branded in their own conscience as with a hot iron, forbidding marriage and commanding to abstain from foods which God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth.
