Walking With a Limp: The Road Back After Failure

The restoration class still meets on Tuesday. The welcome-back card still has last month's sentence in the margin. New name. New start. The man who told the truth last October sits in the second chair from the door with a restored title and a gait this room has already decided should look like the old one. Nobody staged a refusal. The week arrived like a calendar that learned how to keep the class and still treat the limp as a private river he should finish before he comes all the way back.

A woman two rows over can tell you the same story from a quieter wreck. She came back after the hidden years. She signed the covenant. She also learned the new grammar of this church: healing as a repaired walk, restoration as a class, the old competence as proof the night is over. The room thanked her for coming back. Then the room waited for the limp to disappear so nobody would have to watch it.

This is a sermon for a church that already knows how to survive a wreck and does not know how to walk after one. If you preach Genesis 32 as a map of anyone's relapse, you will lie. If you preach it as Yahweh meeting Jacob at the Jabbok in history, you give this church a God who can wound the self a man used to survive, give him a name he did not invent, and send him into sunrise toward people who already know the old one.
