Worship With Empty Hands: The Responsibility in the Room

The elder minutes still have last month's Blessed-be-the-name sentence. We will worship with empty hands when a named household loses what they did not budget. Three chairs around this table already know which family asked for a slower week after the messengers finished in their house, and which chair still treats the next named tearing as staff work. One of those chairs called a we-already-handled-the-grief sentence prudence and then kept the meeting on time. Nobody spoke the next word the room already needed.

A man two chairs down signed the last vote that printed Blessed be the name on the packet. He also signed the first one that left a named empty-handed household in a smaller office. He has not asked who still holds the room.

This is a sermon about the responsibility already in the room. If you preach Job 1:20-22 as a map of anyone's private grief, you will lie. If you preach it as Job in Uz, after livestock, servants, and children are gone, who tears the robe, falls down, and worships without a transcript of the heavenly council, you give this church a God whose name can be blessed when the hands are empty. You also take away the cheap leadership move that treats leftover indoor empty-handed worship as the charge the chairs already keep.

Hear the first hour of Job's loss, from the World English Bible: "Then Job arose, and tore his robe, and shaved his head, and fell down on the ground, and worshiped. He said, “Naked I came out of my mother’s womb, and naked will I return there. Yahweh gave, and Yahweh has taken away. Blessed be Yahweh’s name.” In all this, Job didn’t sin, nor charge God with wrongdoing."

This is Job in Uz, after the messengers have finished. It is not a diagram of your unfinished mood, your quieter hallway, or the delay this table already owns. Application comes after that fact, from the God who still receives empty hands, who does not require a transcript, who lets honest grief and honest worship occupy the same hour, and who will not let leftover indoor empty-handed worship write the only charge the chairs are allowed to keep.
