The woman who used to sit three rows from the aisle got the scan results on a Tuesday and has been asking the same question in the parking lot ever since.

Nobody in this church has a transcript. Somebody will still try to hand her one. Someone will say God is teaching you. Someone will say everything happens for a reason. Someone will say at least now you know what matters. Job 38 will not help you run that sentence. Job 38 will put a man who has already asked, already argued, already sat in ash, in front of a God who answers out of a whirlwind without handing him the file.

This is a sermon about the week you did not choose. If you preach Job 38 as a map of anyone's private weather, you will lie. If you preach it as Yahweh answering Job out of the whirlwind with foundations, seas, morning, and the width of the earth, you give this church a God whose wisdom is larger than the answer we demanded. You also take away the cheap pastoral move that invents a why before anyone is allowed to stay.
