When Fear Writes the Report: For the Week You Did Not Choose Preview · Opening of the manuscript The kitchen table still has Tuesday on it. The scan is face down. The grapes from the waiting room sit in a bowl nobody has touched. The church's care sheet is already written in the other chair: the numbers, the timeline, the list of what this household cannot do. Accurate. Heavy. Silent about the God who already carried them through a wilderness this congregation still sings about.
A deacon two seats over signed the last meal train. He also wrote the unofficial version in the parking lot.
We are grasshoppers, and so we will be in their sight. Nobody asked whether the report had room for the Name.
This is a sermon for a church sitting with people who did not choose this week and still letting fear write the only public sentence. If you preach Numbers 13 as a map of anyone's private anxiety, you will lie. If you preach it as Israel at Kadesh, receiving a true report of real walls while forgetting the God who had already given the land, you give this church a living God whose character still belongs in the room after the scan, and you take away the cheap courage that pretends the walls were never there.
Text
Hear the report as Holy Scripture tells it, from the World English Bible: "They returned from spying out the land at the end of forty days. They went and came to Moses, to Aaron, and to all the congregation of the children of Israel, to the wilderness of Paran, to Kadesh; and brought back word to them and to all the congregation. They showed them the fruit of the land. They told him, and said, “We came to the land where you sent us. Surely it flows with milk and honey, and this is its fruit.
