The God Who Sees: The Practice That Makes It Visible

The formation group finished the unit on presence last Tuesday. The cards are still on the table. Someone can name three practices without looking down. Wednesday morning the same woman is in the parking lot she has used since winter. Two of the people from the group walk past her with the kind of nod you give a coat rack. The class was honest. The lot was not.

A man who leads the early prayer circle knows a version of the same split. He can talk for twenty minutes about the God who sees. He cannot tell you the last time he asked a used person in this church where they came from and where they are going, then waited for an answer he did not already own. Invisibility in a church that studies formation rarely looks like an empty curriculum. It looks like a finished unit and an unasked question.

This is a sermon for a church that has learned to say "God sees you" and has not yet learned the practice that makes the sentence visible. If you preach Genesis 16 as a map of the hearer's feelings, you will lie. If you preach it as Yahweh finding Hagar in the wilderness, you give this church a God whose seeing can be obeyed on the ground, not only laminated on a card.
