Leave Something at the Edge: The Responsibility in the Room

The elder table still has last month's neighbor-love sentence in the minutes. Love your neighbor. Leave the edge. Three chairs around this table already know which household named a rent week after the harvest vote, and which chair still treats the next named corner as staff work. One of those chairs called a delayed wage prudence and then kept the meeting on time. Nobody spoke the next word the hired servant already needed.

A man two chairs down signed the last vote that printed Leviticus on the packet. He also signed the first one that left the named edge in a smaller office. He has a sentence about stewardship. He has not asked who still holds the room.

This is a sermon about the responsibility already in the room. If you preach Leviticus 19 as a map of anyone's overfull calendar, you will lie. If you preach it as Yahweh's law to Israel in the land, you give this church a holy God whose character shows up where the poor and the foreigner can already walk, and a people who cannot treat a finished neighbor-love sentence as the charge they already keep.

Hear the statute as Holy Scripture tells it, from the World English Bible: "When you reap the harvest of your land, you shall not wholly reap the corners of your field, neither shall you gather the gleanings of your harvest. You shall not glean your vineyard, neither shall you gather the fallen grapes of your vineyard. You shall leave them for the poor and for the foreigner. I am Yahweh your God. You shall not steal. You shall not lie. You shall not deceive one another. You shall not swear by my name falsely, and profane the name of your God. I am Yahweh. You shall not oppress your neighbor, nor rob him. The wages of a hired servant shall not remain with you all night until the morning. You shall not curse the deaf, nor put a stumbling block before the blind; but you shall fear your God. I am Yahweh. You shall do no injustice in judgment. You shall not be partial to the poor, nor show favoritism to the great; but you shall judge your neighbor in righteousness. You shall not go around as a slanderer among your people.
