1 Timothy 2:1–7 · World English Bible The names we leave out A church can say that everyone matters to God while its public prayers tell a smaller story. We name the people we know. We name the officials whose decisions we welcome. We remember a missionary whose picture hangs near the door. Those are good people to remember. Yet a prayer list can become a map of our preferences.

Some names appear often, while others never appear at all. Consider an imagined congregation preparing its Sunday prayer. One member proposes praying for an official who recently disappointed the church. The room grows tense. Someone wonders whether naming that official will sound like support. Someone else wants the prayer to become a speech about everything the official has done wrong. The church has a real question to answer: can we seek someone's good before God without approving their conduct?

Paul's instruction to Timothy gives us a better starting place than our political comfort. The church belongs to the God who saves, and its intercession must take its shape from the one mediator, Jesus Christ. We do not decide who may be prayed for by checking who agrees with us. We learn to carry people before God because Christ has taught us where our own hope rests.

Read the entire passage carefully. Notice how Paul moves from all people, to rulers, to God's saving desire, and then to the one mediator and his witness among the nations.

The primary passage

I exhort therefore, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercessions, and givings of thanks be made for all men, for kings and all who are in high places, that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and reverence.

For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all people to be saved and come to full knowledge of the truth.
