Imagine a household with food for tonight and a utility bill it cannot pay next week. This is an illustration, not a reported case. The lights still work. The refrigerator still runs. From the street, nothing appears to have changed. Yet someone in that home can already see a deadline approaching and has begun deciding which essential thing will go unpaid.
A church may have help available after the disconnection. But can anyone ask before it happens? Does our process require a household to lose something important before its need becomes serious enough to consider? Those questions belong beside our prayers for struggling neighbors.
Leviticus 25:35-38 calls God's people to uphold a neighbor whose means are failing. It also forbids them to make that neighbor's poverty an opportunity for gain. We cannot control every outcome, and a congregation cannot meet every need alone. We can examine whether the help we offer comes with avoidable delay or an obligation that makes life harder.
The passage gives us a clear direction: God calls his people to uphold a neighbor in poverty without turning that neighbor's crisis into their gain. We will hear the command in its original setting, then consider how Christ's love teaches a church to respond today.
The passage in its own words
Leviticus 25:35-38, World English Bible: “‘If your brother has become poor, and his hand can’t support himself among you, then you shall uphold him. He shall live with you like an alien and a temporary resident.
Take no interest from him or profit; but fear your God, that your brother may live among you.
You shall not lend him your money at interest, nor give him your food for profit. I am Yahweh your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, to give you the land of Canaan, and to be your God.
