Enough for Today: The Practice That Makes It Visible

Ready to Preach

God gives a day's portion and will not let hoarded trust keep, and that dependence is practiced in the next morning's gathering, not stored in a daily-bread sentence.

The practice card is still blank. Last month the class wrote enough for today in the margin of the packet.

This month the same class can quote the dew, the omer, and the worms. The woman in the second row has a Tuesday she can already name: the first gathering she has been postponing because the manna story felt safer than asking God for this morning. The man by the aisle has a store he already knows: the extra he kept overnight because tomorrow looked thinner than trust. A teacher at the table has both names on a list.

He has a sentence about daily bread. He has not asked who still treats the next morning's gathering as optional homework.

This is a sermon for a church that already owns enough for today and still treats the practice that would make it visible as extra credit. If you preach Exodus 16 as a map of anyone's private pantry, you will lie. If you preach it as Israel in the wilderness of Sin, you give this church a God who gives a day's portion and will not let hoarded trust keep, and you take away the cheap discipleship that hides behind a finished daily-bread sentence.

Text

Hear the camp as Holy Scripture tells it, from the World English Bible: "In the evening, quail came up and covered the camp; and in the morning the dew lay around the camp.
