The practice packet still has first step in the margin. Last month the class wrote it under the heading and closed the folder. This month the same class can quote the living God is among you and still leave the shoes dry. The woman in the second row has a named next act she has been postponing because saying the verse felt safer than putting a foot where the water is already up. The man by the aisle has a river this church already named, and a finished sentence that never left the packet.

A kid in the hallway is deciding whether this church practices the crossing, or harvests the whole hour and then prints the first step on a card.

This is a sermon for a church that already owns come and hear and still treats the practice that would make it visible as homework after the hour. If you preach Joshua 3 as a map of anyone's private courage program, you will lie. If you preach it as Israel at harvest flood, priests carrying the ark, soles in the Jordan before the water moved, you give this church a living God who goes first, and you take away the cheap discipleship that hides behind a finished first-step sentence.

Text

Hear the crossing as Holy Scripture tells it, from the World English Bible: "Yahweh said to Joshua, “Today I will begin to magnify you in the sight of all Israel, that they may know that as I was with Moses, so I will be with you. You shall command the priests who bear the ark of the covenant, saying, ‘When you come to the brink of the waters of the Jordan, you shall stand still in the Jordan.’” Joshua said to the children of Israel, “Come here, and hear the words of Yahweh your God.”
