The God We Can Control: The Responsibility in the Room

Ready to Preach

Idolatry turns holy mystery into something we can manage, so the people who still hold this room cannot treat a finished living-God sentence as the charge they already keep.

The elder table still has last month's living-God sentence in the minutes. God remains himself. Three chairs around this table already know which household named the delay after the mountain stayed quiet, and which chair still treats the next named charge as a later project. One of those chairs called the wait stewardship and then kept the meeting on time. Nobody spoke the next word the camp already needed.

A man two chairs down signed the last vote that printed Yahweh on the packet. He also signed the first one that left the named charge in a smaller office. He has a sentence about prudence. He has not asked who still holds the room.

This is a sermon about the responsibility already in the room. If you preach Exodus 32 as a map of anyone's private impatience, you will lie. If you preach it as Israel at the foot of the mountain, you give this church a God who will not be managed, and a people who cannot treat a finished living-God sentence as the charge they already keep.

Text

Hear the camp as Holy Scripture tells it, from the World English Bible: "When the people saw that Moses delayed coming down from the mountain, the people gathered themselves together to Aaron, and said to him, “Come, make us gods, which shall go before us; for as for this Moses, the man who brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we don’t know what has become of him.”
