When God Answers With a Horizon: The Road Back After Failure

The apology went out in March. The reply came back kind and short. He used to unlock this building. He sits through the first song from the last pew and leaves before anyone has to decide whether to hug him.

The church said the right words the week he told the truth. What they have not said is what the next morning is for.

Failure has a smell in a small church. People get polite. They form a committee and call the committee grace. What they do not form is a road. The man in the last pew is waiting to understand why it happened before he will walk. The people who loved him are waiting for a finished explanation before they will treat him as a brother.

A woman can tell the same story from the other side of the lot. She told the truth in this room and then treated Sunday as a waiting room. If God would hand her the file, the first honest step could start. Job 38 will not scold the hunger. It will refuse the bargain.

This is a sermon for a charge that knows how to survive a confession and does not know how to walk after one. If you preach Job 38 as a map of anyone's private wreck, you will lie. If you preach it as Yahweh answering Job out of the whirlwind, you give this church a God whose wisdom is larger than the answer we demanded. You also take away the cheap recovery move that treats leftover indoor explanation as the next honest step.
