Learning the Voice: The Road Back After Failure

The recovery packet still has last month's I-already-heard-from-God sentence. We will listen when the wreck has a calendar. The man who already left after the fall sits in the second chair with a restored name and a closed notebook under the pew. The woman who still sits with the named household sits two rows back. She signed the welcome. She also learned the new grammar of this church: return as a finished hearing, restoration as a recited voice line, the official version as the road back. Nobody asked what the night still holds.

A sponsor two seats over printed the hearing line on the packet and left the named household where the wreck already is. He has a sentence about healing. He has not asked who still waits on the near side of the silence.

This is a sermon for a church that already knows how to survive a wreck and does not know how to hear after one. If you preach 1 Samuel 3 as a map of anyone's private relapse, you will lie. If you preach it as a boy in Yahweh's temple, an old priest whose eyes have grown dim, a rare word, a lamp that has not gone out, and an Eli who finally teaches him how to answer, you give this church a God who still speaks after a house has already failed, and you take away the cheap road that hides behind a finished I-already-heard-from-God sentence.

Hear the night as Holy Scripture tells it, from the World English Bible: "The child Samuel ministered to Yahweh before Eli. Yahweh’s word was rare in those days. There were not many visions, then. At that time, when Eli was laid down in his place (now his eyes had begun to grow dim, so that he could not see), and God’s lamp hadn’t yet gone out, and Samuel had laid down in Yahweh’s temple where God’s ark was, Yahweh called Samuel. He said, “Here I am.” He ran to Eli and said, “Here I am; for you called me.” He said, “I didn’t call. Lie down again.” He went and lay down.
