Guard the Source: The Practice That Makes It Visible

The phone is already on the table. It did not ask permission. Before the coffee cools, Tuesday has a liturgy this church already knows how to run. Scroll. Replay. A hallway theory about a person two rows down. The chairs can quote Proverbs 4:23.

The first hour already filled the spring. A child two seats over already received the public version of this discipleship. The public version can print a reading plan and leave a class. It still treats the calendar as the whole practice, while the heart fills with whatever the first hour poured in. If you preach Proverbs 4 as a technique for making attention behave, you will lie. Preach it as wisdom: life flows from what the heart is allowed to hold.

Hear Proverbs 4:20-27, from the World English Bible: "My son, attend to my words. Turn your ear to my sayings. Let them not depart from your eyes. Keep them in the center of your heart. For they are life to those who find them, and health to their whole body. Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it is the wellspring of life. Put away from yourself a perverse mouth. Put corrupt lips far from you. Let your eyes look straight ahead. Fix your gaze directly before you.

Make the path of your feet level. Let all of your ways be established. Don’t turn to the right hand nor to the left. Remove your foot from evil." (Proverbs 4:20-27, WEB) This is father-to-son wisdom. It is not a contract, a map of anyone's private panic, or a warrant for the chairs to play God. The load-bearing wall is the wellspring: keep the heart, because life comes from there.

The practice that makes that keeping visible is not a feeling. It is attention you can name.
