Worship With Empty Hands: What This Changes Between Us

The fellowship hall still has two tables after the same funeral lunch. One table has the family whose house went quiet this month. The other has the people who already know the sentences. Last Sunday this church printed that we would walk with them. By Tuesday the hallway had a quieter rule: they will let us know if they need anything. The need is already in the room. The rule is how the rest of us keep our calendars.

A neighbor two seats over is deciding whether this church can let grief and blessing occupy the same air, or whether one household's empty hands will stay a private problem the rest of the body does not have to rearrange around.

This is a sermon about what Job 1 changes between you. If you preach it as a map of anyone's interior weather, you will lie. If you preach it as a man in Uz, after livestock, servants, and children are gone, who worships without a transcript of the heavenly council, you give this church a God whose name can be blessed when the hands are empty, and a people who still have to decide whether that blessing will stay a mood one chair keeps or become a shared hour the quieter chairs can still recognize.

Pastors know the indoor version. We know how to bless the name in the study and then leave the flock looking managed. The text will put a practice on the ground, in air other people can still hear.

Hear the first hour of Job's loss, from the World English Bible: "Then Job arose, and tore his robe, and shaved his head, and fell down on the ground, and worshiped. He said, “Naked I came out of my mother’s womb, and naked will I return there. Yahweh gave, and Yahweh has taken away. Blessed be Yahweh’s name.” In all this, Job didn’t sin, nor charge God with wrongdoing."
