Leave Something at the Edge: What This Changes Between Us

The extra chair is still empty at the end of the fellowship table. Last month a household in this room named a rent week out loud. The hallway answered with a verse, a crate for the pantry, and a promise that someone would follow up. By Sunday the same table can quote Leviticus and still harvest the whole field as if the poor and the foreigner were a private file between the pastor and one family.

A teenager two seats down is deciding whether this church is a people who leave the edge together or a set of private harvests with better songs.

This is a sermon about what Leviticus 19 changes between you. If you preach it as a map of anyone's overfull calendar, you will lie. If you preach it as Yahweh's law to Israel in the land, you give this church a holy God whose character shows up at the unharvested edge, and a people who cannot keep a brother's need as a private harvest the rest of the table never has to leave standing.

Hear the statute as Holy Scripture tells it, from the World English Bible: "When you reap the harvest of your land, you shall not wholly reap the corners of your field, neither shall you gather the gleanings of your harvest. You shall not glean your vineyard, neither shall you gather the fallen grapes of your vineyard. You shall leave them for the poor and for the foreigner. I am Yahweh your God. You shall not steal. You shall not lie. You shall not deceive one another. You shall not swear by my name falsely, and profane the name of your God. I am Yahweh. You shall not oppress your neighbor, nor rob him. The wages of a hired servant shall not remain with you all night until the morning. You shall not curse the deaf, nor put a stumbling block before the blind; but you shall fear your God. I am Yahweh. You shall do no injustice in judgment. You shall not be partial to the poor, nor show favoritism to the great; but you shall judge your neighbor in righteousness. You shall not go around as a slanderer among your people.
