Guard the Source: What This Changes Between Us

The blessing has already been said. In the hallway, two people who sang the same song now decide what this church is allowed to hear.

Weather. A joke about lunch. A sentence about a third person who is not in the conversation. The wellspring verse is still on the screen in the room they left. The public liturgy of the foyer is already filling something else.

A church can quote Proverbs 4:23 and still treat heart-keeping as indoor work. Keep your own heart. Manage your own feed. Do not make the body responsible for what the mouth does after the amen. If you preach Proverbs 4 as a private technique for making attention behave, you will lie. Preach it as wisdom: the direction of a life flows from what the heart is allowed to hold. Then name what that claim is supposed to change between us this week.

Hear Proverbs 4:20-27, from the World English Bible: "My son, attend to my words. Turn your ear to my sayings. Let them not depart from your eyes. Keep them in the center of your heart. For they are life to those who find them, and health to their whole body. Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it is the wellspring of life. Put away from yourself a perverse mouth. Put corrupt lips far from you. Let your eyes look straight ahead. Fix your gaze directly before you.

Make the path of your feet level. Let all of your ways be established. Don’t turn to the right hand nor to the left. Remove your foot from evil." (Proverbs 4:20-27, WEB) This is father-to-son wisdom. It is not a contract, a map of anyone's private panic, or a warrant for the chairs to play God over one another. The load-bearing wall is the wellspring: keep the heart, because life comes from there. Community in this hour is living that between us, not only agreeing with it as indoor doctrine the hallway never has to keep.
