Go Without the Map: The Road Back After Failure

The folder is still labeled "after." Three people have a foyer sentence about giving him space. The Tuesday table has the same empty chair it had in March. Across the hall, a good woman who runs the calendar will not put a name back until a restoration plan hangs on the wall. Nobody staged a trial. The week did not arrive like a scandal. It arrived like a silence you keep extending because the land of coming back does not look finished yet.

A man in the third row can tell the same story from a different chair. He told the truth in Lent. The room thanked him for his honesty. Then the room asked him to wait until the path looked clean enough to walk in public. He went home and called that mercy. The map of restoration is missing. The God who already spoke is not.

This is a sermon for a church in an uncertain transition that has started treating repentance as a later chapter. If you preach Genesis 12 as a diagram of the hearer's shame, you will lie. If you preach it as Yahweh calling Abram before the land was shown, you give this church a God who can be obeyed on the road back after failure while the next mile is still a ridge.

Hear the call as Holy Scripture tells it, from the World English Bible: "Now Yahweh said to Abram, “Leave your country, and your relatives, and your father’s house, and go to the land that I will show you. I will make of you a great nation. I will bless you and make your name great.

You will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and I will curse him who treats you with contempt. All the families of the earth will be blessed through you.” So Abram went, as Yahweh had told him. Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he departed from Haran. Abram took Sarai his wife, Lot his brother’s son, all their possessions that they had gathered, and the people whom they had acquired in Haran, and they went to go into the land of Canaan. They entered into the land of Canaan.
