A field can disappear while we are still looking at it. We see the projected yield, the rent, the next delivery, the cost of another season. Those concerns are real. Families depend on them. But the living ground can become invisible beneath the figures. We start asking only what we can get from it, and stop asking what faithful care requires of us.

Some of us do not own a field. We rent an apartment, maintain a church lawn, buy groceries, or make decisions about a small patch of soil. We still live from the land. Food arrives in packaging, but it does not begin there.

The distance between a checkout counter and a farm does not remove our dependence on what God has made.

Leviticus brings worship into that dependence. Here holiness reaches beyond the sanctuary into the vineyard. God addresses how his people work the land, when they stop, and who may eat. Land care cannot be dismissed as unspiritual when the Lord himself speaks about it. Listen to Leviticus 25:1–7 in the World English Bible.

The primary passage

Yahweh said to Moses on Mount Sinai,

“Speak to the children of Israel, and tell them, ‘When you come into the land which I give you, then the land shall keep a Sabbath to Yahweh.

You shall sow your field six years, and you shall prune your vineyard six years, and gather in its fruits; but in the seventh year there shall be a Sabbath of solemn rest for the land, a Sabbath to Yahweh. You shall not sow your field or prune your vineyard.

What grows of itself in your harvest you shall not reap, and you shall not gather the grapes of your undressed vine. It shall be a year of solemn rest for the land.

The Sabbath of the land shall be for food for you; for yourself, for your servant, for your maid, for your hired servant, and for your stranger, who lives as a foreigner with you.
