Guard the Source: The Witness Our Neighbors Can See

The neighbor already has a sermon. It is not the one you finished at 11:42. It is the sentence they heard in the parking lot while the blessing was still in the air. It is the look on a face at the register. It is the way a household talks about people who are not in the room. You can print a mission statement on the wall and still treat the heart as indoor furniture the street never has to keep.

A church can quote Proverbs 4:23 and still treat witness as a later program. Keep your own heart. Run your own feed. Then, when the calendar allows, go be a light. If you preach Proverbs 4 as a private technique for making attention behave, you will lie. Preach it as wisdom: the direction of a life flows from what the heart is allowed to hold. Then name what that claim is supposed to change in the sight of people who will never sit in these chairs.

Hear Proverbs 4:20-27, from the World English Bible: "My son, attend to my words. Turn your ear to my sayings. Let them not depart from your eyes. Keep them in the center of your heart. For they are life to those who find them, and health to their whole body. Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it is the wellspring of life. Put away from yourself a perverse mouth. Put corrupt lips far from you. Let your eyes look straight ahead. Fix your gaze directly before you.

Make the path of your feet level. Let all of your ways be established. Don’t turn to the right hand nor to the left. Remove your foot from evil." (Proverbs 4:20-27, WEB) This is father-to-son wisdom. It is not a contract, a map of anyone's private panic, or a sales plan for filling the room. The load-bearing wall is the wellspring: keep the heart, because life comes from there. Mission in this hour is living that where a neighbor can already see the overflow, not treating witness as a later costume the heart never had to wear.
