Then they handed the new believer the same 5 a.m. rule the elder has been keeping for twenty years. Nobody asked whether that boy had tested those hours. Nobody asked whether Yahweh had delivered him through that particular morning.

A woman two seats over copied another woman's fasting plan because the class called it courage. She cannot move in it. The room thanked her for growing. The plan still belongs to a life she has not lived.

This is a sermon for a church that already owns courage language and still treats someone else's tested practice as the discipleship it already keeps. If you preach 1 Samuel 17 as a map of anyone's personality, anxiety, or unfinished journal, you will lie. If you preach it as David before Saul, a real Philistine in the valley, armor that would not move, five stones from a real brook, and a God who does not save with sword and spear, you give this church a God who does not require a disciple to wear another man's practice, and you take away the cheap formation move that treats a borrowed routine as the practice that makes faithfulness visible.
