When Envy Enters the Sanctuary: For the Week You Did Not Choose

Someone in this room is already doing the math. They did not pick the week they got. The scan results came on a Tuesday that still had a grocery list on the fridge. The raise went to the person who never stays late and never tells the truth. Another church across town keeps posting numbers while this one keeps sitting with empty chairs and faithful people who are tired. The ledger in their head is simple. The wicked look at ease. The people who washed their hands are still waiting for the books to make sense.

Psalm 73 was written by a worship leader who almost lost his footing on that same math. Asaph does not pretend the week looks fair. He names the envy out loud. He names the slip. Then he walks into the sanctuary, and the presence of God corrects the accounting he could not correct from the parking lot.

Preach this psalm as a scolding against jealousy and you will miss the man on the floor. Preach it as a promise that the wicked will fail by Friday and you will lie to people whose unfair week is going to last.

Preach it as poetry that tells the truth about envy and then tells a better truth about God.

Hear Psalm 73:1-28, from the World English Bible: "Surely God is good to Israel, to those who are pure in heart. But as for me, my feet were almost gone. My steps had nearly slipped. For I was envious of the arrogant, when I saw the prosperity of the wicked. For there are no struggles in their death, but their strength is firm. They are free from burdens of men, neither are they plagued like other men. Therefore pride is like a chain around their neck. Violence covers them like a garment. Their eyes bulge with fat. Their minds pass the limits of conceit. They scoff and speak with malice. In arrogance, they threaten oppression. They have set their mouth in the heavens. Their tongue walks through the earth. Therefore their people return to them, and they drink up waters of abundance.
