Nobody can tell you the version that actually happened in the parking lot after the meeting. He did not choose the vote that used him, the sibling who sold the story, or the friend who sat down to eat while the cistern stayed empty. He is still in the third row. The room has learned to skip to a later chapter so nobody has to sit with a pit.

A woman two pews over knows a quieter version. She showed up after the household finished with her.

The room thanked her. Then the room started talking about meaning, and how God must have something better already lined up. She needed a people who would tell the truth about what human hands did and still believe God was not finished.

This is a sermon for a church sitting with people who were thrown into a week they did not choose. If you preach Genesis 37 as a map of anyone's workplace, family table, or elder board, you will lie. If you preach it as Joseph's brothers throwing him into a real pit in history, you give this church a God whose long work human betrayal cannot cancel.
