When God Answers With a Horizon: The Practice That Makes It Visible

Ready to Preach

God's wisdom is larger than the answer we demanded, and the practice that makes that horizon visible is a church that stays with unanswered questions without reducing God to an explanation.

The formation packet still has a blank under spiritual practices. Last Sunday this church had a public question nobody could finish. Someone filled the blank with mystery. The mystery never left the paper.

A quieter chair two seats over already knows how to survive a hard week. He also knows how to print a horizon on a slide and then keep the named unanswered question indoor, where a second person cannot still see the asking.

This is a sermon for a church that already knows how to talk about the wisdom of God and does not know how to make that wisdom a practice the flock can watch. If you preach Job 38 as a map of anyone's private weather, you will lie. If you preach it as Yahweh answering Job out of the whirlwind, you give this church a God whose wisdom is larger than the answer we demanded. You also take away the cheap formation move that treats a printed mystery as the same thing as a shared hour.
