Guard the Source: The Responsibility in the Room

The closed session already has a sermon. It is not the one you finished at 9:12. It is the sentence after the motion while the prayer is still in the air. It is the look on a face when a named household comes up. It is the way the chairs talk about people who are not in the room. You can print a wellspring verse on the packet and still treat the heart as indoor furniture this table never has to keep.

A church can quote Proverbs 4:23 and still treat leadership as a later technique. Keep your own heart. Run your own feed. Then, when the calendar allows, go shepherd. If you preach Proverbs 4 as a private method for making attention behave, you will lie. Preach it as wisdom: the direction of a life flows from what the heart is allowed to hold. Then name what that claim is supposed to change in the chairs this week.

Hear Proverbs 4:20-27, from the World English Bible: "My son, attend to my words. Turn your ear to my sayings. Let them not depart from your eyes. Keep them in the center of your heart. For they are life to those who find them, and health to their whole body. Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it is the wellspring of life. Put away from yourself a perverse mouth. Put corrupt lips far from you. Let your eyes look straight ahead. Fix your gaze directly before you.

Make the path of your feet level. Let all of your ways be established. Don’t turn to the right hand nor to the left. Remove your foot from evil." (Proverbs 4:20-27, WEB) This is father-to-son wisdom. It is not a contract, a map of anyone's private panic, or a management plan for filling the chairs. The load-bearing wall is the wellspring: keep the heart, because life comes from there. Faithful leadership in this hour is living that where a flock can already drink the overflow, not treating oversight as a later costume the heart never had to wear.
