The man who keeps the midweek hospital list has a sending in his pocket he has not said out loud. The woman who balances the books was asked last Tuesday to sit with a family whose week broke, and she has a sentence about not being the right person. The search packet still has last month's qualified language in the margin. Nobody came hoping to take their shoes off in ordinary work. The week arrived like a calendar that learned how to keep the flock and still treat holy ground as a feeling you get after the call is confirmed.

A deacon two seats over signed the last job description that printed ready to lead at the top. He also signed the first one that left the reluctant name in the chair. He has a sentence about calling. He has not asked who is still keeping sheep while this room waits for a better resume.

This is a sermon for a church sitting in a week it did not choose and stalling on a sending it does not feel qualified to carry. If you preach the bush as a map of anyone's private anxiety, you will lie. If you preach it as Moses keeping Jethro's flock at Horeb in a real wilderness, you give this church a God who meets a man in ordinary work and sends him toward Pharaoh before the token arrives.

Hear the meeting as Holy Scripture tells it, from the World English Bible: "Now Moses was keeping the flock of Jethro, his father-in-law, the priest of Midian, and he led the flock to the back of the wilderness, and came to God’s mountain, to Horeb. Yahweh’s angel appeared to him in a flame of fire out of the middle of a bush. He looked, and behold, the bush burned with fire, and the bush was not consumed.
